Guidelines and Deadline

Hi,

We won't be having class tomorrow, so please make sure that you e-mail your 14.33 paper to Prof. Greenstone and I by 8 p.m. tomorrow night. The paper can be in MS Word or PDF format and should be 10-15 pages of text plus tables and figures (longer is fine as well). Please use 12 pt. Times New Roman Font with 1 inch margins. You can write an abstract if you wish but it isn't required.

14.33 Draft Papers

Dear 14.33'ers,

I thought it would be useful to clarify a few issues about the next few
classes:

1. MIT requires that 1 week of classes is cancelled each semester.
This is usually done by observing President's Day and/or Patriot's Day.
We will satisfy this rule by not holding class this week. As part of
this, Jessica and I will not hold "special" office hours during the
regular class time. However, we will hold our regular office hours on
Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. As usual, we are available at other
times if the regular hours are inconvenient for you-send an email to
set-up a time.

2. If you are on the "EARLY" half of your team, then your draft is
due at 5 pm on 4/18. It should be sent electronically to Jessica Cohen
and she will post it. You are on the "EARLY" half of your team if you
last presented to your classmates on March 9th.

3. If you are on the "LATE" half of your team, then your draft is
due at 5 pm on 4/25. It should be sent electronically to Jessica Cohen
and she will post it. You are on the "LATE" half of your team if you
last presented to your classmates on March 16th.

4. The draft should begin to resemble your full paper. In
particular, it should include each of the sections that your final paper
will have. For the sections that are not yet complete, you should
include an outline of what is coming. It should also include
preliminary versions of your tables and figures. Many of you will not
have completed the analysis yet and, if you are in this situation, you
should include blank tables/figures and/or outlines of what they will
look like.

5. In the week that your draft is due, you will be expected to make
your final presentation to the class. You should plan on presenting
your entire project in roughly 12 minutes. There will then be a brief
discussion where your fellow students, along with Jessica and me, will
provide feedback on how to improve your paper. This will be the last
opportunity to get feedback in the classroom.

6. It is essential that you read your classmates' papers once they
are posted and be prepared to comment on them in class on 4/20 and 4/27.
As I have stressed, your grade depends on your participation. These two
classes are an essential part of our joint effort to produce high
quality papers.

7. On 4/20 and 4/27, the 9:30 am TEAM will meet from 9-10:30 am to
accommodate the longer student presentations. The 10:30 am TEAM will
meet from 10:30 am - 12 pm.

Groups for 14.33

I have re-posted the group list for 14.33 on the Stellar website, so that it is clear who will be presenting next week and who will be presenting the following week. Each group's members are listed in alphabetical order and the first five members of each group will present next week. If you cannot find your
name on the list, please contact Jessica (j_cohen@mit.edu)
immediately. The 9:30 team will meet from 9:30-10:30 and the 10:30
group will meet from 10:30-11:30. Everyone is expected to show up
on time for their team meetings, since it will be unfair to their
team members if the full team is not there.
