24.00  Problems of Philosophy

Spring 2005

Instructor: Rae Langton

TAs: Lauren M. Ashwell, Hongwoo Kwon, Christopher Robichaud

Lecture:  MW12  (32-141)

Information:

This course will give you an introduction to some central problems of philosophy. We¿ll begin with Descartes¿ Meditations on First Philosophy, one of the most important works in the Western philosophical tradition, which poses many of these problems in a gripping way. We¿ll then devote special attention to some of them: the existence of God; knowledge and the will; reason and faith; and the mind-body problem. In the latter part of the course we turn to the subject of ethics, looking particularly at the connections between morality and happiness. Throughout we¿ll draw on readings by important figures in the history of philosophy as well as contemporary authors. In grasping and evaluating these problems for yourself, you¿ll develop your philosophical skills, and your critical and argumentative skills more generally.

Extension of deadline and guest lectures

The deadline for the second Argument Analysis Exercise is being extended to Friday April 22nd (previously it was Friday April 15th). This extension is to enable students to work on their revised first essays, and submit them, with time to concentrate thereafter on the second Argument Analysis Exercise.

I'm also delighted to announce that we will be having more guest lectures in 24.00, from Lauren Ashwell (Wednesday April 6th) and Richard Holton (Monday April 11th).
