Letter grades
Dear 18.02 students:
As explained at the beginning of the course in the Information file, a numerical average is computed, and the letter grade is a function of that. Here are the minimum numerical averages needed:
96 A+
89 A
82 A-
80 B+
76 B
72 B-
70 C+
66 C
62 C-
55 D
0 F
For first-year students, who receive Pass/No Record, C- or above counts as Pass. To find out your grade, calculate it yourself based on the above, or visit WebSIS; probably it will be available there next week. Your final exam is being held by your recitation leader (except that right now I have the exams for the sections of Prof. Vogan and Dr. Ormsby, and also most of the conflict finals), so please visit your recitation leader if you want to view the exam.
In any case, congratulations on all your hard work! I hope it helps you in your future subjects. And I hope that you'll come visit me in 2-244 later on during your time at MIT to let me know how you are doing!
Happy holidays,
Bjorn Poonen

Revised: Office hours for the rest of the semester
I've added an extra office hour on Friday, and I shifted
the Monday office hour again, to avoid conflicting with the
freshman physics finals.
So my remaining office hours will be as follows:
Fri Dec 10, 9:30-10:30am and 2-3pm
Mon Dec 13, 1-2pm
Best wishes,
Bjorn Poonen

Final exam
The final exam is Tues. Dec. 14, 9am-12 at Johnson
Track. Please plan to arrive by 8:55am sharp at the
latest. No notes, books, or electronic devices are
permitted. All you need to bring are pencils or pens, and
your student ID card.
There will be no makeup final. If you are sick, seek medical attention, stay home, email me and your recitation instructor as soon as possible, and contact a dean at S^3 to have an excuse notice sent; you will then receive a grade of OX for the course and will have to retake an 18.02 final exam sometime in 2011 to change it to a regular grade: contact Galina Lastovkina <galina@math.mit.edu>, 617-253-4977, room 2-108 if you have questions about this.
The following topics will not be covered on the final exam (but probably will be useful to you in later MIT subjects): Kepler's laws, least squares, named PDEs (Laplace equation, heat equation, wave equation), Maxwell's equations, and proofs of theorems. The exam covers all other topics presented in lecture and recitation. The format of the exam will be similar to that of the practice finals in the Materials section of Stellar.
After the exam, solutions will be posted on Stellar. You may view your graded exam in 2-108. Your final letter grade will be available online at WebSIS as soon as it is ready.

Midterm 4
Midterm 4 is Fri. Dec. 3 from 2:05 to 2:55pm, in two
locations.
Those with last names in the range A to Lh: go to 10-250, and sit every other seat.
Those with last names in the range Li to Z: go to 50-340 (Walker Memorial).
Please plan to arrive by 2:00pm sharp at the latest, and use the restroom beforehand if possible!
Because of MIT regulations about exams during the last week of classes, there will be no makeup midterm for those who score below the minimum passing grade on midterm 4. So do well the first time!
If you're sick, email me and your recitation leader in advance, stay home, and read the instructions in the Information pages. Midterm 4 makeup exams should be scheduled on an individual basis by contacting Galina Lastovkina <galina@math.mit.edu>, 617-253-4977, room 2-108.
No notes, books, or electronic devices are permitted. All you need to bring are pencils or pens, and your student ID card.
The exam covers the topics presented in lecture and recitation up until Thanksgiving, and the corresponding sections in the textbook and supplementary notes as outlined in the Reading list. The exam will focus on the topics covered since the previous midterm, but math is cumulative, so you still need to know the material from earlier. There will be a few true/false questions, but explanations will not be required.
After the exam, solutions will be posted on Stellar. Exams will be returned during your next recitation section. If your exam needs to be regraded, explain on a separate sheet of paper why your grade should be different, and submit it with your entire exam to your recitation instructor.

Makeup midterm 3
Your midterm 3 score should be available on Stellar by noon
today, if not earlier (email your recitation leader after noon if
not). If you scored below 60 on midterm 3, you may take a
makeup midterm at one time of your choice listed in the
"Midterm 3" announcement for a chance to increase your
score up to 60. (Students who scored 60 or above should not
come to the makeup midterms.)
