Announcements
2009 spring 6A and 6B
Dear 8.03 students,Solutions for 6A and 6B are missing, and I could not find them. So, let me make some comments on them.
I think 6B can be solved in a way similar to Problem 3 in 2010 Exam2. You just need to keep track of how the shape of y moves by decomposing it into a right-going part and left-going part.
For 6A, you need to look at how the shape of dy/dt changes first, instead of y. Notice that the propagation velocities of y and \dot{y} are the same, which is v = sqrt(T / mu). Then, you can find how the shape of dy/dt at t = 0.25 by decomposing the original shape at t=0 to right-going wave and left-going wave. Then, by integrating dy/dt with respect to time, you can find the shape of y.

Beni

Comments and corrections on practice problems
Dear 8.03 students,Practice problem 1.4. The solution seems wrong, and the positions of red and blue spots must be opposite.
Practice problem 8. Part (c) may be too difficult, so you can ignore it.
For reflection and refraction, I recommend you to read Chap 7.4 of Bekefi and Barrett if you have difficulty in understanding the concepts. (You don't need to follow derivations, but need to understand the concepts).
Exam 2009 spring, Problem 1.6
The solution seems wrong. lambda = s sin theta must be the correct
answer.
I will have office hours tomorrow from 7pm. Please feel free to make use of this office hour for your preparation.
Best,
Beni
