8.334  Statistical Mechanics II

Spring 2009

Instructor: Senthil Todadri

Lecture:  TRF2.30-4  (4-370)

Information:

This is the second part of a two-course sequence in statistical mechanics. Topics to be discussed include the concepts of broken symmetry, Landau order parameters, phase transitions and critical phenomena.   A syllabus has been posted in these pages (see `Materials').

Students will be required to complete an end-of-term project as part of this course. This will mainly decide the grade. There will also be a few problem sets that will count for the grade. There will be many more optional problem sets that students are strongly urged to solve but are not required to. There is no final exam.

Presentation schedule

The end of term presentations will happen on May 12 and May 14. Each presentation will be for 15 minutes (including 2 minutes for questions). As there are 12 registered students, we should be able to finish in two days. In case it is necessary I have put down Friday May 15  as a back-up date.

I have created a `doodle' webpage where you can sign on to a particular time slot. Please follow the link

http://www.doodle.com/5wm7iid2d8u8veii

and sign on to one of the Tuesday or Thursday slots. I urge you to do this a.s.a.p. Please let me know if there are any problems with the doodle webpage.
