14.01  Principles of Microeconomics

The table below shows the distribution of final letter grades in 14.01. The table excludes 6 first-year students who opted not take Exam #3 and (as a consequence) received a final no-credit grade (D or F).

A total of 282 students took Exam #3 during the week of May 17. Among this group, the distribution of numerical scores was as follows:

A total of 316 students took both Exam #1 and Exam #2. Of those students, 23 students dropped the course, 3 switched to listener, and 290 remain registered. The average score on Exam #2 for those who dropped or switched to listener was 34, while the average score of those who remained in the course was 63. The distribution of combined scores on Exams 1 and 2 among those students who remain registered is:

Exam #3 will be a closed-book examination of 2 hours duration.  The examination is not a comprehensive final.  It will cover all of the material assigned from April 7 through May 12, including lecture notes, homework assignments, and the relevant chapters in the textbook.

Exam #3 will have a mixture of short-answer questions and longer, multi-part questions, but no true-false questions. As was the case with Exams #1 and #2, you will be required to enter all answers on a separate answer sheet.

For practice, we have posted the solutions to Exam #3 for six prior semesters. Optional review sessions will be announced shortly.

If you have a conflict with another exam during the afternoon of May 17, the MIT Registrar will notify you about a specific alternate date, time and location to take the exam.  The fact that a student may have multiple exams scheduled during May 17-18 is not by itself considered a conflict, and we will not be able to accommodate students merely because they have multiple exams in a short period.

As explained in the Course Syllabus, Exam #3 represents only a minor part of the overall course grade.  A non-graduating student who has an excused absence from Exam #3 and who is otherwise expected to pass the course will receive a grade of I (Incomplete).

These grade distributions are posted as a guide for students who are considering dropping 14.01 before Drop Date. There is no predetermined grade distribution in 14.01, and distributions vary from year to year.
