Readings for next week

Next Tuesday we discuss the results reported in Becker, Ketrez and Nevins (2008); next Thursday we discuss Kawahara's (2007) chapter 4, whose results are summarized in the Theoretical Linguistics article fro 2006. All papers are on Stellar. On Tuesday May 11 we'll discuss a different paper in the same tradition, author TBA.

Reminder on class presentations: May 13.

The class will present their term projects on Thursday May 13. We will have a double session that day, beginning at 2:30 and ending at 5:30. I will announce if there is a change of room after 4:30.

Each presentation gets 20 mins, + 5 mins for switching presenters. You should plan to speak for no more than 15 mins, to give the audience time to comment. Bring a handout. Rehearse your talk to make sure it fits into the 15 min frame.

Here is the proposed schedule for this event: I assume that you will present in alphabetical order, though nothing hinges on that.

PS-7 Hebrew in OT-CC

I have posted the following announcement under Homework:

Propose an OT-CC analysis of the patterns in (a), (b) and (c) in the Hebrew problem. Begin the analysis of each part by identifying the M and F constraints directly implicated in the process, such that M >> F. In some cases one process may involve M1 >> M2 >> F; most will require F1, M >> F2. In each case where you had to postulate an ordering of rules in your earlier rule-based analysis, state how your OT-CC analysis gets the effect of the order. Summarize the overall analysis as a Hasse diagram.

Better constraints are simpler ones (so *e is better as a trigger of syncope for part (b) than *e/VC_CV). In some cases simplicity is hard to achieve; give it a try anyway.

Hebrew assignment: a small clarification

In the instructions to the Hebrew assignment, the statement on section (b) highlights a syncope rule (e.g. in alternations like it-bader vs. it-badr-u). However there is another new process illustrated by the data in (b), which also comes up later in (c). The data in (c) provides evidence for just one new process.
