Bring your laptop to class on Wednesday

Hello all,

On Wednesday the beginning of the class will be dedicated to filling in your evaluation of 15.012 - a critical step for keeping the course relevant. When done, we will continue with the debate.

Therefore, please remember to bring your laptop so that we can be swift, with everyone registering evaluations at the same time.

Enjoy the sunny afternoon!

To keep in mind for the debates

Hello all,

Please know the following about the upcoming debates as this makes them more fun (and helps your final grade):

-The choice of presentations was done primarily to form an interesting discussion, and cannot be considered as a prediction of your grade. In fact some presentations were not chosen because they were close to being "too complete," others had interesting angles that are worth testing out in the classroom.

-As you enter on Wednesday, sit down with your team, behind a sign you made with your team name. You will be graded as teams, not individuals.

-The selected teams will have max 5 minutes to present their slides. The order they present in will be picked out of Roberto's MIT cap.

- Once these teams have presented, we will open up the question to discussion from the rest of the class. The other teams that did not get selected will have an opportunity to present their arguments either in support of one of the answers already provided or for a whole new answer.

-The debate will be judged by a panel of experts (like “American Idol”). Two of the judges will be Tavneet and Roberto. There will be an additional third external judge who will kindly spend one debate day with us.

-The grade of the debate has two main parts:
 The first part of the grade for each team comes from the slides prepared by every team. These will be graded by Roberto, Tavneet and the TAs. This accounts for 45% of your total grade in the class (15% for each slide deck).
 The second part of the grade deals with the actual days of the debate. This will count for a total of 30% of your grade, 10% for each debate day which comes from the grade that the panel of experts give each team. The teams can earn this portion of the grade in two ways. If they are picked to present then that grade will come directly from the presentation. If they are not picked to present, then they should make a statement when the discussion is opened and that statement
will award their team grades. In addition, any other substantive comments made by anyone will award their team points (note that the only individual points for the debates come from attendance). Though all the debate grades are group grades, you will get zero if you do not attend.
 Note that, in total, the debates make up 75% of your grade

Good luck! We're really looking forward to following you
