8.284  Modern Astrophysics

Hi all,

I posted a set of practice problems + solutions to help you prepare for the final exam next week (in addition to "Pset 11", which you do not need to hand in).  On the first two pages of the practice problems is given a list of useful constants and some possibly useful expressions.  These two pages will be included with the exam.

The two hour Final is on Tuesday May 20 from 10-12 in 8-205.  Note that the exam begins at 10am (not 9am as stated in MIT's final schedule).   You can bring two single-sided pages of notes.  Please also bring a calculator.

I will have office hours on Friday 3-5.  Our TA Alex will have a review session + office hours on Monday 3-5 in the 6th floor Solarium of building 37.  He plans to do a quick overview of all the topics and then focus on cosmology.  If you would like to meet with either of us but cannot make these times, please let us know.

In problem 6d, when it says to take the limit as theta_s goes to infinity, it means take the limit as theta_s becomes large compared to the Einstein angle.

I made some small changes to problem 6 on Pset 10.  Although we did not quite get to the lens equation during lecture today, you should be able to answer the questions with the additional information now provided.  But please let me know if anything is not clear.
