Looking for student helpers

Next year, I plan to create a 6 week edX module on linear and integer programming. But my real motivation is to create additional educational materials for 15.053/8, including online exercises that can be graded by computer. I also hope to create modules on topics not covered last year for students who want to learn additional materials online. And I would like to develop some really interesting spreadsheets that illustrate applications of optimization.

If you are interested in helping out (for pay or for credit), please let me know. It can be for this summer, or next fall, or next spring, or a combination. I would like to hire three or four students.

Excerpts from the individual write-ups

I have read all of your individual write-ups. It is one of my favorite parts of the course. It’s really interesting to read what you consider to be an important lesson that you learned in these projects. I find your write-ups to be enlightening and occasionally find them to be inspirational.

I have put a document in Materials/Projects entitled "Excerpts from the individual write-ups." It includes more than 5 pages of excerpts. I organized the excerpts by headings that are hopefully useful, and admittedly far from perfect. I kept the excerpts verbatim except for the correction of an occasional typo.

I avoided taking excerpts that would identify the writer or group in some manner. The excerpts did not include specific content that could be used to identify a project.

Many of you wrote what you learned about working with a group on a substantive project. For some of you, this was the first group project that you have had at MIT. From the write-ups, it appears that group experiences were for the most part quite positive and instructive. While there were some groups that experienced more difficulties than others, even these group members seemed to value and learn from the experience.

There are two specific lessons that I will be sure to pass on to students in subsequent years. The first is “Don’t rely on others to send you the relevant data.” There were several groups that were disappointed in how difficult it is to obtain data that is “owned” by someone else. The second is “Work hard at the beginning to make sure that the topic is a good one.”

I think you will find the excerpts interesting. I hope you also find them useful.
