PS 5, and a reading

Hi all,
A quick reminder that tomorrow, we'll continue our discussion of misapplication in English stress, starting with the problem observed at the end of Wednesday's handout for a phase-based approach for handling pairs like orìginálity vs. oríginalness. (Please give this last page or so a quick read)

We've also posted a problem set, due a week from tomorrow. In order to complete it, it will be useful to selections from read Benua's 1997 UMass thesis (posted on Stellar). In particular, chapter 3 contains a problem in Sundanese that we will discuss in class on Wednesday. However, if you would like a more systematic introduction to the proposal for using Output-Output Faithfulness to handle cyclicity effects, chapter 2 would be a better place to start.
Best,
--Adam

PS-4 posted

Hi all,
Problem set 4 (English stress) has been posted. It has two parts, plus a bonus round. We will discuss the analysis of Part 1 in class next Monday (April 3), so please have a look at it and come prepared to discuss it. Part 2 is relatively short and various approaches have already been (and will be further) alluded to in class. Your write-up of parts 1 and 2 will be due on Wednesday.

The "bonus round" contains some data that is more interesting and problematic than the data in Part 2. You do not need to provide a written analysis of it, but we will discuss the problem (and various solutions) starting on Wednesday, so you should at least examine it to appreciate the problem.

Reminder: meeting about squibs

Hi all,

Please meet with us (Adam, Erin, myself) to confirm squib topics before or during spring break. The idea is to make some initial progress on your squib before classes resume. Skype and email consultations are ok.

The need for such meetings is critical if you do not have a topic.
