Norman Rockwell, Rosie the Riveter (1944)

Professor: Christopher Capozzola

Seminar:  Tuesday 7-10pm  (1-273)

Information:

Writing in the wake of the Civil War, poet Walt Whitman insisted that "the real war will never get in the books." Throughout American history, war has fundamentally shaped the ways that Americans think about themselves, their fellow Americans, and the meanings of national citizenship. This subject examines how Americans have experienced war and represented it in the rapidly evolving media of communication in the twentieth century, and interprets history, politics, and popular culture in terms of changing ideas about American national identity.

First Class Meeting This Evening

Hello. 21H.214: War and American Society will meet this evening at 7pm in 1-273 for discussion and screening of some brief film clips. We may not go the full three hours, but most of it.

The class may be a bit too big for good discussion (and the room in which we are scheduled to meet), so if you are reading this message and know that you will not be able to take the class, please let me know so I can offer your space to another student.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Looking forward to seeing you this evening!

Chris.
