Study Groups

We have reserved Room 3-434 (Combo 4-9-7-9) for 2.001 study groups every Sunday (1pm-10pm) and Monday (7pm-10pm).

2.001 Dept Tutors

In addition to the course staff, there are also 2.001 MechE Dept tutors available to help you in the "fishbowl" (3-148) with the following schedule:
Monday 3-5pm and 6-7pm
Tuesday 3-5pm and 6-7pm
Wednesday 7-8pm
Thursday 3-5pm
Sunday 12-2pm.
The three tutors ( Dominic, Zachery and Gabriel) were all 2.001 students in Fall 2018, so they will be an excellent resources.

Course Description
Introduction to statics and the mechanics of deformable solids. Emphasis on the three basic principles of equilibrium, geometric compatibility, and material behavior. Stress and its relation to force and moment; strain and its relation to displacement; linear elasticity with thermal expansion. Intro to plasticity and visco-elasticity. Failure modes. Application to simple engineering structures such as rods, shafts, beams, and trusses.

2.001 Final Exams and Letter grades on stellar!

I just released all grades on stellar.

You were quite good on the (long!) exam! Average was at ~70% which is a bit below where I would have liked to see it, but still nice... More importantly, I saw the vast majority of you have digested the fundamental ideas of 2.001.
So, good job 2.001 class of F19!

We also calculated the nominal score for each student in the class, (based on grading criteria described in the logistics document) and uploaded the nominal scores (out of 100) to stellar.
Class average for that was at 86/100 with an 8.5 STDEV. An impressive performance overall!!!

Please check and make sure your letter grade seems consistent with your nominal score. I will upload grades to the registar on December 30, so let me know before that if you spot any errors.

Unless there are errors in the grade books, I will not reply to emails asking me to change/improve your scores. We looked at each exam carefully and we have been as generous as possible, based on your performance. The final exams will be available for you to pick up over IAP in Christina's office(1-310) during normal work hours.
When assigning letter grades, we also tried to be generous while looking at the whole performance over the semester, so please do not haggle on grades. Only contact me if you think there is an actual mistake in our calculations.

It has been a pleasure to get to know you all this semester. You have been a hard-working, engaged, generous class. I know it has been very daunting at times, but we have set down an important foundation for your life as engineers.
Thank you for helping us improve the course with your constructive feedback and good suggestions. We will continue to try to make 2.001 better and you are an important part of that process.
