Welcome and first assignment

Dear Social Science Methods Students,

(1) Our class begins 9:00am Tuesday, September 11 in room E53-354 –a seminar room inside the Anthropology Department offices. We meet for 3 hours with a short break. The syllabus will be posted shortly.

(2) In the meantime, we would like to let you know the books you will need and the assignment for the first day.

Required Books:

Babbie, The Practice of Social Research

Little, Varieties of Social Explanation. This book is out of print and the Coop was able to obtain a limited number of copies. We have purchased 9 copies of this book which we can distribute if necessary.

(3) Assignment for September 11:
Come to class prepared to discuss a piece of research you admire (Bring a copy and by noon on Monday 9/10, send to Kieran Downes ( Kieran@mit.edu ) a scanned copy that we can upload.)

We are looking forward to an exciting semester with lively conversation. By the end of the semester, we hope that each member of the class will have designed a piece of empirical research. It is not necessary that this be a project you actually do. It is essential, however, that it be plausible and well designed.

See you next Tuesday.

Anne and Susan
