Closing Remarks

Hi everyone,

First and foremost, it has been a pleasure and privilege teaching & learning with each and every one of you. I hope you enjoyed this course and learned the principles of microbial physiology in a manner that will facilitate your future endeavors, be they within or outside the academic arena.

I will send you your final grades (both for Exam #3 as well as your "official" course grade) over the weekend or early next week.

Again, this semester has been a lot of fun. Feel free to keep in touch, and I hope to see you around in the future. Best,

- Andy

Exam #3

Hi everyone,

(i) Exam #3 is now available on Stellar. It will be due and collected on the final day of class (Wednesday, December 11th). As the course is coming to an end, there will be no extensions.

(ii) We will be focusing on antibiotic action and ROS tomorrow in class. Please make sure you have read Ezraty et al. (Science, 2013) and come to class prepared for an interesting discussion.

(iii) Please note that course evaluations are now available. I am obligated to encourage you to provide your feedback (be fair and -- hopefully -- kind): http://web.mit.edu/subjectevaluation/

Announcements (11.25.13)

Hi everyone,

As several students have indicated that they won't be at class this Wednesday due to Thanksgiving plans, we will be rescheduling the next literature discussion for next week.

This is going to be fun.

Hi everyone,

Ezraty et al. (Science, 2013) along with its supplemental material has been posted and will be presented by Sitara next week. This is going to be a very, very special literature discussion as Graham (and hopefully Tony as well) will be providing invaluable insight into ROS-dependent/independent antibiotic toxicity. In fact, Graham will be focusing on the biology underlying this fascinating area of research during his lecture.

Let me make this clear: it is NOT a week to "forget" to read the paper. Trust me, you're not going to have a better opportunity/venue to learn about multiple perspectives on a critically important aspect of microbiology that has very recently caught the attention of scientists around the world.

Please let me know ASAP if -- due to the Thanksgiving -- you will not be able to make it on Wednesday. If a majority of you cannot make it, perhaps we will change the day for literature discussion to Monday. Regardless, I'm looking forward to this. You should as well.

The 22nd amino acid

Hi everyone,

Tony mentioned this early in class today, but please take time to read Hao et al. (Science, 2002), which highlights L-pyrrolysine.
