ClassTomorrow = NULL. But...

Hi Class,

As the semester has already ended officially, there will be no class tomorrow. However, Wenzhen Yuan from Ted's group will talk about tactile sensors and robotics during the T-Ruth Group meeting on Monday 12-1PM. Everyone is more than welcome to join us then. If you are not in the T-Ruth group and plan to come over, do let me know by Friday so that I can get a head count for ordering free food and also send you the location information. ;-)

Last but not least, you may find the following two papers useful (available on Stellar). Hope you have had a great semester, and have a wonderful holiday ahead!

Dario, Paolo, and Danilo De Rossi. "Tactile sensors and the gripping challenge: Increasing the performance of sensors over a wide range of force is a first step toward robotry that can hold and manipulate objects as humans do." Spectrum, IEEE 22.8 (1985): 46-53.

Yousef, Hanna, Mehdi Boukallel, and Kaspar Althoefer. "Tactile sensing for dexterous in-hand manipulation in robotics—a review." Sensors and Actuators A: Physical 167.2 (2011): 171-187.

Class on 12/06: Scene Understanding and Context-Based Vision

Dear Class,

On Friday Adam Kraft will present topics on scene understanding and context-based vision. Here are the two papers he will focus on:

Geometric Context from a Single Image (D. Hoiem, A.A. Efros, and M. Hebert, ICCV 2005)
http://www.cs.uiuc.edu/~dhoiem/publications/Hoiem_Geometric.pdf

Putting Objects in Perspective (D. Hoiem, A.A. Efros, and M. Hebert, IJCV 2008)
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~efros/hoiem_ijcv2008.pdf

The second paper uses the method of the first to determine ground, vertical and sky labels for regions in the image. Both papers are available on Stellar.

Enjoy!

Class on 11/08: Human-Robot Interaction

Hi Class,

On Friday Wilma Bainbridge will talk about the importance of touch in human-robot interaction (HRI). She will primarily focus on her paper below, with some fun robot videos and a literature review of tactile HRI research.

Bainbridge et al. 2012. A Methodological Outline and Utility Assessment of Sensor-based Biosignal Measurement in Human-Robot Interaction.
http://wilmabainbridge.com/papers/bainbridge-2012-HRI-biosignals.pdf

The reading material is also available on Stellar. See you on Friday!

Class on 11/01: Functional Specification for Material Reproduction and 3D Printing

Hi Class,

For tomorrow's class, we will have a guest speaker, Professor Wojciech Matusik, to talk about functional specification for material reproduction and also 3D printing. Below are the reading materials:

Bickel et al. 2010. Design and Fabrication of Materials with Desired Deformation Behavior
http://people.csail.mit.edu/wojciech/DAF/DAF.pdf

Spec2Fab: A Reducer-Tuner Model for Translating Specifications to 3D Prints
http://spec2fab.mit.edu/

They are also uploaded on Stellar. See you tomorrow in class!
