Lab Reports Module 1

Hello 5.351 Students,

-The lab reports have been graded by the course TA and reviewed by the Faculty in charge of this Module. Please stop in to pick up your reports and final grades for Module 1, 5.351.

-It will be invaluable for this experiment to have the input of your insight. Would you please stop in for a few minutes?

-Please come in M-R this week anytime from 4-5:30pm or 12:30-1:00pm. If you come before 1:00pm please email me ahead of time.

Final Presentations

Hello Everybody,

At long last I have uploaded the guidelines for the final presentation for fall 2018. You can look at these under the materials section, but please don't print them off as I will provide copies in lab on Wednesday/Thursday. The main differences are:

- You will present all three experiments
- I have changed the wording to emphasize what I am looking for
- I have created a "rubric" to help you see the relative weight of things. This is not actually the rubric that will be used, it is just provided to help you prepare.

I have made a doodle poll so that you can list your preferred times. Please leave a comment if you have a need for a specific time slot, for example I know many people have important commitments at 5 p.m., so please let me be aware of any issues like that. Things will likely fall slightly behind schedule with so many of us in each section. If you are available later in the lab period, please list those as your times. I will post the final schedule on Friday. Please note that doodle is not so sophisticated to have slots such as 1-1:20, so notice that there are around three slots every hour and they will be divided by every twenty minutes in the hour i.e. 1, 1:20, 1:40, and so on(starting of course at MIT time).

Presentation Guidelines

Hello Everybody,

I have just posted last spring semester's presentation guidelines in the materials section. The guidelines for this year will likely be very similar but are subject to change. Due to scheduling, my guidelines and rubric will be uploaded on Tuesday evening in preparation for our presentation workshop day (Wednesday and Thursday are mandatory lab days and there will be a quiz).

Most Important: Your lab manual has a section on what to expect for an Oral Report. This includes a 4-6 pg. summary of the experimental details, results, and calculations from ALL of the experiments. Please be sure to re-read this part of the manual.

I apologize for not posting this earlier as I was hoping to have my own posted this weekend. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions but keep in mind we will have the entire lab session devoted to this on Wednesday or Thursday and I will be more prepared to help then!

Mandatory Lecture Tuesday, September 25

In the next lecture, Tuesday September 25, Professor Suzanne T. Lane will conduct a session on how to read an experimental article. To prepare for this lecture, please read the articles recently posted under “Materials” in the “CI-M Project” folder. The two key articles that you should read prior to coming to the lecture are “How to Read A Scientific Article,” and then using the techniques outlined there, please read the experimental article, “Exploring the effect of axial ligand substitution (X=Br, NCS, CN) on the photodecomposition and electrochemical activity of [MnX(N-C)(CO)3] complexes.” In Tuesday’s lecture Suzanne Lane will go more into depth on how to understand and analyze the reasoning of experimental work when the methods and content is still new to you.

This session is a transition from 5.351 to 5.352 and is the first instruction towards more advanced work that you will do in 5.352, as well as the beginning of the communication instruction component of 5.352.
