Information:
How did the Europeans who began arriving on these shores in 1492 make sense of the America and Americans they found? How have later generations remembered, understood, and represented that encounter? This semester, we will examine two kinds of texts: first-hand accounts of encounters with the land and people of the Americas by English and French explorers, colonists, and settlers; interpretations and retellings of these accounts in drama, film, essays, children¿s books, novels, and at historical sites. Readings and films from England, France, Brazil, Canada, the Caribbean, and South Africa, and from (within the United States) early Massachusetts, Virginia, and New York.

Scheduling
This class will meet for the first time on 2/14; two makeup sessions will be scheduled later in the semester.There will be one full-day field trip, scheduled at a time to be arranged between 3/16 and 4/6, and two or three evening screenings.
