Preparation for John Essigmann's Lectures

Dear 20.440 Students,

I am going to start teaching this Wednesday.  Using a tumor as a model system, I am going to link fundamental pathways of intermediary metabolism to the provision of the energy resources for cancer cell growth.  Pete Dedon gave you a good introduction to the field in the metabonomics lectures.  I would like you to review his lecture notes and, in addition, look back at your undergraduate notes from biochemistry.  Specifically look at the following pathways:  glycolysis, the TCA cycle, pentose phosphate pathway, the Cori cycle and lipid biosynthesis and catabolism.  Also, please look at the Hanahan and Weinberg (2000) review you read earlier in the term.

See you Wednesday,

John
