14.20  Indust Org & Competitive Strat

Spring 2013

Instructor: Nancy L Rose

TAs: Gaston Illanes, David Liu, Sarah N Moshary

Lecture:  MW1-2.30  (E51-395)
Recitation:  F 1 - 2 p.m.  (E51-395)

Information:

14.20 analyzes the acquisition and use of market power by firms, strategic interactions among firms, and the role of government competition policy.  We will approach this subject from both theoretical and applied perspectives; in addition to assigned course readings, regular reading of the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, or Economist is strongly encouraged.

This class is highly participatory.  Class attendance and engagement in discussions of application readings is required.  Student teams are responsible for managing entry, capacity, and pricing decisions of their "firm" as part of a semester-long Competitive Strategy Game.  Problem sets and exams round out course requirements.

By the end of this course, you will be well-positioned to apply economic models and tools to analyze and understand the strategic behavior of firms across a wide variety of markets and decisions.  You will have considerable experience framing these insights and communicating them in both small group (team) and large, whole class settings.

Final Exam Review Session

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to hold an exam review session for Friday 17 at the regular recitation time in the regular classroom. I can go over an outline of the material that we have covered, solve exercises, go over particular topics you found difficult, or anything else that you'd find useful.

If you plan on coming to the review session and have strong feelings about what I should cover, shoot me an email or let me know when you see me.

See you tomorrow,

Gaston

Problem Set 5

I've posted a revision to Problem Set 5 to improve clarity in a couple of the questions and simplify problem 3.  The demand functions in problem 3 have changed; if you've already solved the original problem, just write "original" on your pset and turn that in.  Otherwise, please use the version posted tonight.  Thanks!
