Hi all,

We'll have a session on the unsolvability of the quintic tomorrow (Saturday) at 3 pm. And office hours on Galois theory / maybe some char p Galois Theory stuff at 4:30 pm on Sunday! Zoom links will be made available tomorrow.

Office hours this week

Hi all,

Hopefully you've all started on Pset 5! Please let me know if you might need extra time. The sooner you let me know, the easier it is for everyone involved!

I'm planning to have another session on unsolvability of the quintic -- last time we gave the outline of the proof, but that involved taking two things on faith. I'm planning on addressing one of the things this week, and the other thing next week. Office hours will be on Saturday -- let me know what a good time is (not earlier than 2 pm, and not later than 730 pm).

In addition to this, if there's interest, I'll either hold general office hours or have a session on Galois theory in characteristic p. Send me an email / post on piazza to let me know which (if any) you'd prefer! Also, let me know whether you'd prefer Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Correction to problem 3 in the final pset.

The question asks you to prove that a polynomial has coefficients in F, where F hasn't been defined. Define F to be the fixed field K^H.

Office hours + extra office hours postponed to Saturday, 3 pm

Hi all,

I'll be holding office hours + extra topics office hours on Saturday, 3 pm. Also, I will shortly upload a reference for the splitting field theorem (proved over the course of the first 2 Galois theory lectures) onto the course website. And please remember, the pset is due on the 20th!
