Recording of our last class

Hi everyone,

Here is a Zoom recording of our last class today:
https://mit.zoom.us/rec/share/xNZOP-Dey31LUJXr7WHcVIcxT4fAX6a80XVL_KcKyBvJxKxeGTM2yM1mer03klAX

If you haven't already, please send me the final version of your Rounded Binary composition ASAP.

You did really good work this semester, under extraordinary circumstances. Congratulations, all!

Preparation for Tuesday, May 12

Today's class recording, May 7:
https://mit.zoom.us/rec/share/vpJFLunt0mNOBa_E03PDQPAQArX5T6a803Qe__UKzktruzeuV6BrfjoBcMcA_a4D

Writing: Complete a revised draft of your rounded binary movement by Tuesday. If you have already done this, consider writing one or two variations by Tuesday (optional!)

Analysis: Listen to Schumann's Ich grolle nicht and Chopin's Prelude no. 21 in Bb Major: Scores are available on Stellar, recordings on Naxos or any streaming service, including YouTube. In the Schumann, follow the text and compare to the original poem (by Heinrich Heine-included with the score); why does the composer change the text? How does the form of the song compare to the form of the original poem? Analyze the harmony of the first four measures.   In the Chopin, what is the harmonic rhythm in the first 8 measures? Analyze the harmony in those measures using Roman numerals. What do you make of the extended  contrasting middle section, starting at m. 17?

Score and Audio track for “Bridge Over Troubled Water”

If you have submitted a dictation and not received it back from me please let me know.

And...it has been a pleasure teaching you both in the lab and online. What I really miss is the thrill of hearing everyone sing together in the same space. I wish you all a safe and hopefully relaxing summer break.

Be well!

Preparation for Thursday, May 7

Today's class, May 5:
https://mit.zoom.us/rec/share/vpJFLunt0mNOBa_E03PDQPAQArX5T6a803Qe__UKzktruzeuV6BrfjoBcMcA_a4D

Writing: Your goal is to finish a rounded binary movement by the last day of class, May 12. You need to have completed a draft, handed it in to me in time to get back my feedback,  and revised as necessary. At the latest, you should submit your first draft of a complete theme by Thursday.

Analysis: Analyze the form of the theme of Mozart's D major Theme and Variations (Piano Sonata K. 284, third movement; both the score and a recording are on Stellar). What is familiar about the form, what is different? Analyze the harmony throughout, and be prepared to discuss.

In addition, we shall begin our discussion of 'Mixture' or 'Borrowed Chords', so you might want to begin to familiarize yourself with the music under that heading.
