7.72 discussions May 13 and 15
Discussion of mammalian embryo cultures in vitro May 13
Swanny will lead the discussion of the paper by Sozen, Zernicka-Goetz et al about self-organization of embryoids in vitro from stem cell lines.
The Martyn/Brivanlou paper describes a complementary paper on human embryo cultures for your interest.
The Warmflash et al paper provides background on embryoid cultures that we discussed early in the semester
Following the discussion, Richard will give a short lecture on human genome editing issues – technical and ethical
Discussion of germline editing and ethics surrounding culture and modifications of embryos, gametes and stem cells. May 15
Two papers are listed, one on editing of murine spermatogonial stem cells to correct a germline mutation and one on culture and maturation of murine oocytes and germline stem cells to maturity followed by IVF and generation of viable fertile mice.
Both are worth reading – we will not discuss them in detail but will use them and the information from Monday’s discussion/lecture as basis for a discussion of the potential and concerns these advances raise about possible future applications of these methods.
Come with questions and opinions.
