- ...EZ.
- EZ
is improving, and may someday be good enough for thesis work-but
LaTeX has actually been used to write textbooks, and is a standard
system in many parts of the typesetting industry (along with TeX.)

- FrameMaker will sometimes ``lose''
documents due to bugs. EZ regularly has problems with large
documents. Thesis writers beware...

- ...file
- This information is stored in the file
ending in
.aux, which some people remove between invocations of
LaTeX. Doing this may save space, but it causes LaTeX to have
to repeat a lot of work, so you should avoid doing this in general,
until you're sure that you won't be re-running LaTeX again in the
near future.

- ...editing
- The problem with WYSIWYG
systems is that often what you see isn't really what you get,
and the system usually doesn't have any good way to deal with these
problems. We prefer to think of it as WYSIRN (What You See Is Really
Neat) vs. WYSIWYAF (What You See Is What you Asked For) systems.

- The programs idraw and xfig, in the
sipb locker, will allow you to draw pictures and save them as
PostScript files. Also, the program xv, in the graphics
locker, can convert files from many popular graphics formats to
PostScript format (with some loss of quality). See the SIPB document
An Inessential Guide to Athena for more information.
