I have available a collection of 264 small bitmaps to represent various
newsgroups and news hierarchies. They're all in X11 xbm monochrome
format, sized 48x48. The collection may be retrieved from
iuvax.cs.indiana.edu (129.79.254.192) anonymous ftp as the file
pub/faces/news.tar.Z. They're also retrievable via a mail server --
send mail to mailserv@cs.indiana.edu with the word "help" in the body
for details on using the mail server. The collection also includes a
complete set of Olympic sport events bitmaps.

Also, in pub/faces/logos.tar.Z, there is a collection of 309 bitmaps
representing various universities, companies, countries, etc by their
domain name.

I'd like to solicit more submissions to these collections/databases.
To submit a bitmap to a database, mail the bitmap to

	faces-news@cs.indiana.edu
or	faces-logos@cs.indiana.edu

as appropriate. The subject line should contain only the newsgroup or
newsgroup hierarchy the news bitmap is for (eg, "comp.unix.shell" or
"comp") or the domain address or hierarchy the logo bitmap is for (eg,
"sei.cmu.edu" or "cmu.edu"). Please submit each bitmap in a separate
mailing. You'll receive an automatic acknowledgement of its receipt,
and be credited in the collection's listing.

The mail should contain only the bitmap, preferably in X11 xbm 48x48
format. Any extra comments about the submitted bitmaps can be mailed
separately to

	kinzler@cs.indiana.edu

Until they're checked out and incorporated into the complete databases,
submitted bitmaps will be available separately in the iuvax archives
(pub/faces/incoming/{logos,news}).

These bitmap databases were created primarily for use with the "faces"
software, also available in the iuvax archives. Faces is a window based
tool for visually monitoring lists. Typically it is used to monitor
mail, print queues or users on a system. It contains graphical
interfaces for NeWS, SunView, XView and X11.

Bitmaps can be created by hand or scanned in with a scanner and scaled
down to 48x48 size. Also, one can scrounge around existing bitmap
collections for bitmaps that can be converted and scaled to an
appropriate bitmap for these collections.

Tools to aid in faces bitmap creation are available in the filters
directory of the faces source distribution. Also, I've found these
tools to be invaluable:

	bitmap(1) -- for X11, especially the X11R5 version
	xgrabsc(1),xfontsel(1),xview(1),xmag(1) -- for X11
pbmplus package -- a bunch of bitmap filters and tools, some
of the faces filter tools need these

I could envision these databases being used in software other than
"faces". Currently, the only application I know of for the news
database is a "faces" application called "newscheck". It's like an
iconic version of "rn -c" or "nncheck -t", showing you which of the
newsgroups you read have new news and how many articles in each.

To run "newscheck" you need:

1) "faces" version 1.6.0 or later
2) X11, XView, SunView or NeWS windowing system
3) the news bitmap database
4) perl

The newscheck application is "newscheck.faces" in the scripts directory
of the faces source distribution. You can run it with something like:

        % faces -f <PATH1>/news -e <PATH2>/newscheck.faces -p 300

where <PATH1> and <PATH2> are the paths to the news database and the
newscheck script, respectively.
