NetBSD/pmax port <$Revision: 1.2 $> by Adam Glass Note: this is very preliminary documentation and thus is likely to contain gross errors. Please send any comments/corrections to the author so that it may be improved. This README describes the NetBSD/pmax port. "pmax" was the codename for Digital Equipment's r2k/r3k-based Decstation line of workstations. This NetBSD port consists of the BSD-4.4-lite pmax port as done by Ralph Campbell and integrated into NetBSD by Adam Glass. Since NetBSD has an enhanced 4.4-lite kernel, the integration was quick and uneventful. A few bugs were fixed in the process, and some minor functionality added. In particular an ECOFF exec module was added to the mainline tree and used by the compat_ultrix code to bootstrap processes into ultrix mode. Status: The port (using the ultrix compatibility code described above) gets to single-user. The next project (for the author) is to produce NetBSD/pmax binaries by integrating mips support into the NetBSD toolchain. Meanwhile you can fetch the port and try it. There are many bugs in the ultrix compatibility code and this is a good opportunity for people to find and fix them. Currently the port is hosted under Ultrix but that will be resolved as soon as we go to native binaries. I know of no reason why it can't also be compiled under BSD-4.4 pmax, though likely the makefiles will need slight diddling. The port supports all mips-based Decstations except the 240, and machines w/r4k upgrades. Anyway, the rest of the documents in this directory will describe how to fetch the sources, build them, describe known bugs, etc. Suggested reading order is README (this document), SUP, STATUS, BUGS, and BUILD.
