General README File for ftp-os2.nmsu.edu by Timothy F. Sipples Revised June 29, 1992 Welcome to ftp-os2.nmsu.edu, the Internet's largest and most complete repository for OS/2 software and information. No warranties, expressed or implied, apply to any software or information obtained from this site. This site contains four primary subdirectories: /pub/os2/2.0 Files located below this subdirectory are intended for IBM OS/2 2.0 only. Software is typically 32-bit code, and the information files deal with tips and software specific to this version of OS/2. /pub/os2/all Files located below this subdirectory are intended for all releases of OS/2. /pub/os2/1.x Files located below this subdirectory are for use under OS/2 1.x only. /pub/os2/new New additions to the ftp-os2.nmsu.edu OS/2 archives are crosslisted here for a short time. Look for that latest bit of just released software in this directory. Subdirectories below each of these four are arranged by category. Files are often crosslisted in different directories for convenience. Since the ftp-os2.nmsu.edu OS/2 archives depend on volunteer submission of OS/2 software and information, you are encouraged to contribute any files that are not already located here. Put these new files in directory /pub/downloads, making sure that any necessary documentation accompanies them. Use a common archive format (e.g. Zoo) and transfer in "binary" or "tenex" mode (see below). You may also retrieve files in /pub/downloads that others have just recently submitted, but be aware that such files have not undergone any testing. When approved by the maintainer of this site, these new files will be distributed through the Usenet's comp.binaries.os2 newsgroup and moved to their proper places in the archives. (For full submission guidelines, please consult the file /pub/os2/all/startkit/policy.) To locate a particular file on ftp-os2.nmsu.edu, please retrieve (in ASCII mode) the /pub/os2/00Index file. This file contains a complete listing, with one line descriptions, of all tested archives. (Files located in /pub/downloads are not listed in this index.) Files stored on ftp-os2.nmsu.edu are normally in Zoo archive format (as binary files), although some information files are stored in ASCII. To decode these Zoo files on your OS/2 PC you must first retrieve the Zoo utility, located in /pub/os2/all/archivers. When transfering binary files from ftp-os2.nmsu.edu, be sure to use your ftp software's "binary" or "tenex" mode. Note that while OS/2 2.0 runs both DOS and Windows software exceedingly well, ftp-os2.nmsu.edu is not intended to duplicate the contents of the Internet's fine DOS and Windows archives. Please see the README files located in /pub/os2/2.0/dos and /pub/os2/2.0/windows, respectively, for information on the Internet's DOS and Windows archive sites. OS/2 beginners and experts alike will enjoy reading the Internet's OS/2 Frequently Asked Questions List: User's Edition. The current release of this List can always be found in directory /pub/os2/all/faq. While ftp-os2.nmsu.edu is open to all users at all hours (excepting any system outage), if you are accessing this site from outside North America you may wish to consult the Frequently Asked Questions List for information on OS/2 archives located on other continents. The ftp- os2.nmsu.edu archives are located on the campus of New Mexico State University in the United States. If you are having difficulty retrieving files from or sending files to ftp-os2.nmsu.edu, please ask your local system administrator for assistance. If you still require help, or if you have any questions or comments regarding the ftp-os2.nmsu.edu archives, please mail Michelle Molitor, the maintainer of this site, at os2bin-request@csd4.csd.uwm.edu. This address is intended for questions relating specifically to this site. Your more general OS/2 questions should be directed to the forums described in the OS/2 Frequently Asked Questions List, including the Usenet's various OS/2 newsgroups. Again, welcome to the ftp-os2.nmsu.edu archives, and welcome to OS/2.
