EXTD=3-1901) is credited\nwith having invented the Italian national\nop
EXTD=eratic style. Born the son of a poor\ngrocer in the village of t
EXTD=he Le Roncole (in\nthe province of Parma), he first served as\nan
EXTD=organist in the small city of Busseto at\nthe age of ten. Antoni
EXTD=o Barezzi, a music-\nloving merchant, took Verdi into his home\nan
EXTD=d proved to be a generous patron of\nhis talents. At the age of
EXTD=thirteen, Verdi\nbegan composing and arranging marches,\novertures
EXTD= and cantatas for the large\namateur orchestra that rehearsed in\n
EXTD=Barezzi's home. Verdi applied for\nadmission to the Milan Conser
EXTD=vatory five\nyears later but failed the entrance\nexamination. At
EXTD= Barezzi's expense, Verdi\nthen took private lessons from Vincenc
EXTD=o\nLavigna, a former member of the\norchestra at La Scala in Milan
EXTD= and a\nprofessor of composition. After marrying\nthe daughter of
EXTD= his patron, Verdi spent\nsome time as "Maestro di musica" in the
EXTD=\nprovincial town of Busseto. His operatic\ncareer began in Milan
EXTD= in 1839 with\n"Oberto". For the comic librettos of his\nfirst wo
EXTD=rks Verdi managed to compose\nthe appropriately cheerful musical\n
EXTD=material, although he was stricken by\ntragedy: within the space
EXTD=of one year an\ninsidious illness claimed his wife and two\nchildr
EXTD=en. Verdi remained a reserved,\ntaciturn and exceedingly modest
EXTD=man\nthroughout his life. He intentionally placed\nhis operas bas
EXTD=ed on political themes in\nthe service of the "Risorgimento", the
EXTD=\nItalian unification movement. While a\nsteady stream of opera c
EXTD=ommissions kept\nhim in a constant state of stress,\ndifficulties
EXTD=with censors, singers and\nopera directors often made him feel li
EXTD=ke a\ngalley slave.  In 1847 Verdi began living\nwith Giuseppina S
EXTD=trepponi, a celebrated\nsoprano, and married her twelve years\nlat
EXTD=er. He used the earnings from his\noperas to purchase Sant' Agat
EXTD=a, a\ncountry estate located near Busseto. He\nrepeatedly withdre

EXTD=\nhunter. Verdi was also a political activist\nand one of the mos
EXTD=t important champions\nof the introduction of an international\nco
EXTD=pyright law. He left his entire fortune to\ncharitable instituti
