EXTD=(P)1988 Delta Music Inc. LaserLight 15 808\n\nIn his formative ye
EXTD=ars, Frederic Chopin\n(1810-1849) received a good amount of\nintel
EXTD=lectual stimulation in his parents'\nhome, but music played only
EXTD=a minor role\nin the family. His father, Nicolas Chopin.\nhad emi
EXTD=grated from France to Poland and\nworked first as a French tutor
EXTD=for the\nlanded nobility, later as a French teacher\nat a girls' s
EXTD=chool in Warsaw. Both of\nFrederic's parents were amateur pianis
EXTD=ts.\nWhen listening to music, the gentle,\nsensitive boy would oft
EXTD=en break into\ntears. He soon sought out the piano as a\nmedium f
EXTD=or expressing his feelings\nthrough improvisation and, after havi
EXTD=ng\ntaken a few lessons from the pianist\nAdalbert Zywny, gave his
EXTD= first public\nperformance at the age of eight. "The\nMozart of P
EXTD=oland" was marveled at and\npampered by the Polish nobility, and
EXTD=he\nacquired the fine tastes and cultivated\nmanners of the aristo
EXTD=cracy. For several\nyears Chopin was blessed with a\ncompetent an
EXTD=d understanding teacher in\nthe person of Joseph Elsner, Director
EXTD= of\nthe Warsaw Conservatory. Elsner\ncarefully guided the compos
EXTD=itional talents\nof his charge, encouraged him to take in\nopera a
EXTD=nd concert performances and was\npleased and proud to see the nin
EXTD=eteen-\nyear-old Chopin achieve success as a\ncomposer and pianist
EXTD= in far-off Vienna,\ndespite his frail health. The only criticis
EXTD=m\nof the Viennese critics was that his\nplaying was "too soft".
EXTD=A further trip to\nVienna was followed by a sojourn in Italy\nwhic
EXTD=h was meant to strengthen his\nhealth. It was during Chopin's se
EXTD=cond\nstay in Vienna that revolution broke out in\nWarsaw. Chopin
EXTD= settled in Paris in 1831,\nsoon becoming friends with Liszt, Ber
EXTD=lioz\nand Mendelssohn. Before long, he was a\nhighly sought-after
EXTD= celebrity in the salons\nof the artistically-minded circles of\nP
EXTD=arisian high society. From this time\nonward, Chopin refused to
EXTD=give\nperformances in large concert halls.\nEarnings from commissi
EXTD=oned\ncompositions and from giving piano\nlessons afforded him a l
EXTD=uxurious lifestyle.\nHe met the woman author Georges Sand\nin late
EXTD= 1836, and the two artists soon\nbecame involved in a close relat
EXTD=ionship of\nlove and mutual respect.  Chopin's last\nyears were ma
EXTD=rked by increasing\nmelancholy and severe bouts of illness.\nHe di
EXTD=ed of tuberculosis in his chosen\nhomeland. Chopin's body was bu
EXTD=ried in\nParis, but his heart is kept preserved in a\nvessel at Wa
EXTD=rsaw's Church of the Holy\nCross.
