EXTD=(P)1988 Delta Music Inc. LaserLight 15 802\n\nSometime around the
EXTD= year 1590, Veit\nBach, who was born in Hungary, left his\nhomelan
EXTD=d and settled in Thuringia, where\nhe was allowed to freely pract
EXTD=ice his\nLutheran faith. He was the forefather of\nthe large Bach
EXTD= clan, a musical dynasty\nwhose members enjoyed an almost\nlegenda
EXTD=ry reputation as organists, city\npipers and court orchestra musi
EXTD=cians.\nJohann Sebastian Bach was born in 1685\nin Eisenach. It w
EXTD=as virtually self-evident\nthat he would follow in his father's\nf
EXTD=ootsteps and prepare himself for a city\nmusician's profession by
EXTD= undergoing\nthorough musical training at an early age.\nIn 1695 S
EXTD=ebastian's father died, leaving\nthe boy to be raised by his brot
EXTD=her\nJohann Christoph, who was fourteen\nyears older than Sebastia
EXTD=n. Then, at the\nage of fifteen, the highly talented boy\nreceive
EXTD=d a stipend which enabled him to\nattend St. Michael's School in
EXTD=Luneburg.\nHe sang in the school choir, familiarized\nhimself with
EXTD= the North German art of\norgan playing, delved into the school's
EXTD=\ncomprehensive music library, went on\nstudy excursions to the ne
EXTD=arby musical\ncenters of Celle and Hamburg and\nessentially learne
EXTD=d the musical arts\nautodidactically.  Beginning as city\norganist
EXTD= in the Thuringian cities of\nArnstadt and Mulhausen (1703-1708),
EXTD=\nBach rapidly climbed the social ladder of\nthe musician's profes
EXTD=sion. He spent\nnearly ten years as court organist and\nconcertma
EXTD=ster at the court of Weimar.\nThe years 1717-1723 were enormously
EXTD=\nfruitful for Bach's artistry; as\nKapellmeister of the court orc
EXTD=hestra in\nthe little residential palace of the Prince\nof Cothen,
EXTD= he oversaw a superbly well-\norganized, seventeen-member court\no
EXTD=rchestra. It was in Cothen that Bach\nwrote the Brandenburg Conc
EXTD=ertos, as well\nas various solo concertos and numerous\nworks for
EXTD=keyboard instruments. When the\nprince's interet in music began
EXTD=to wane,\nBach -- also wishing to move to a place\nwhere his growi
EXTD=ng boys could receive an\nacademic education -- left Cothen for\nL
EXTD=eipzig. He spent the last twenty-seven\nyears of his life there,
EXTD= serving in a twofold\ncapacity. As Cantor of St. Thomas'\nSchool
EXTD= (a boarding school for boys), he\nwas responsible for all musica
EXTD=l instruction\ngiven at the school. Moreover, as\n"Director Music
EXTD=es", he was in charge of\nthe music performed in Leipzig's\nchurch
EXTD=es. But Bach was also one of the\nfirst musicians to give concer
EXTD=ts in\ncoffeehouses, conducting an orchestra\nconsisting mainly of
EXTD= students. These\nperformances helped to free music from\nits cou
EXTD=rtly and sacred functions and to\nmake it accessible and familiar
EXTD= to the\nnewly-emerging middle class.
