EXTD=Introduction (by P. Hubert Dopf, SJ):\n\nIn the programme recorded
EXTD= here we do not wish to present a concert, not even a church con
EXTD=cert\nof sacred music. What we want is to allow the listener to
EXTD=immerse himself in the spirit of the\noldest liturgical music of
EXTD=the Latin church, music which, although bound up with the forms
EXTD=of\nthe first centuries of western culture, is much more than a h
EXTD=ighly cultivated art. Gregorian chant\nis the expression of a pr
EXTD=ofound inwardness; it is prayer. Therefore any striving towards
EXTD=\nsuperficial effect is completely foreign to it. Gregorian melo
EXTD=dy is born of the fear of the Lord, \neven in those songs filled
EXTD=out with a jubilus (melisma), which tends to fragment the word w
EXTD=ith\nits long sequences of notes. There remains always a trace o
EXTD=f a certain shy reserve. The believing\nChristian knows that any
EXTD= attempt to voice the divine must come to naught.\n\nA large numbe
EXTD=r of the chants we perform is associated with the subject of the
EXTD= "Holy Spirit," that\nspirit which is in itself the personificati
EXTD=on of the love and joy of God.\n\nOur singing may be understood th
EXTD=us: that all of us - you as the sympathetic listener and we as\ns
EXTD=ingers - allow ourselves to be transported by these ancient chan
EXTD=ts, which sing of the goodness\nand beauty of God and of the good
EXTD= fortune of Man, whom God has favoured.\n\n\nThe Choralschola of th
EXTD=e Vienna Hofburgkapelle:\n\nSince 1952 the Schola has enriched Sun
EXTD=day\nworship at the Vienna Hofburgkapelle with\nGregorian settings
EXTD= of the Proper of the Mass.\nIn doing so they furnish an essentia
EXTD=l part of\nthe traditional liturgy of the High Mass,\nsupplementar
EXTD=y to the Ordinary provided by\nthe Vienna Hofmusikkapelle.\n\nMade
EXTD=up exclusively of former members of\nthe Vienna Boys' Choir, it h
EXTD=as become over\nthe years an internationally recognised\nspecialis
EXTD=t ensemble, receiving many pres-\ntigious invitations. At retrea
EXTD=ts in various\nmonasteries the Schola also tries to maintain\nthe
EXTD=sacred background for a veracious\ninterpretation of the liturgic
EXTD=al chants.\n\nSucceeding Monsignor Kosch and Professor\nSchabasser,
EXTD= P. Hubert Dopf SJ has been\nresponsible for the Schola since 197
EXTD=3. As\nProfessor of Gregorian Studies at the Vienna\nMusikhochsch
EXTD=ule he ensures the consider-\nation of current musicological find
EXTD=ings in\nquestions of interpretation, such as rhythm in\nthe neume
EXTD=s of the Codices of St. Gallen.\n\nThe recordings produced under h
EXTD=is direction\nfor Philips Classics were highly praised by\ninterna
EXTD=tionally recognised specialists and are\ntoday regarded as valuab
EXTD=le models for choral\nperformance practice.
