EXTD=1984 American Gramaphone AGCD-359\n\n\t\t- - - - - - - - -\n\nFantasia
EXTD= is a form which has existed for some time and has\nmeant differe
EXTD=nt things in different periods; however,\ngenerally speaking, "a
EXTD=composition in which the 'free flight\nof fancy' prevails over co
EXTD=mtemporary conventions of form,\nstyle, etc... sometimes used to
EXTD=indicate a dream-like mood."\nHARVARD DICTIONARY\n\nThis piece was
EXTD=conceived as though looking into an arena\nof doors, behind which
EXTD= are feelings to be experienced.\nThe theme will be subjected to
EXTD=these different doors\n(subheadings) and avoided in others ("free
EXTD= flight of fancy"...\npoetic license?). The theme is portrayed i
EXTD=n the chorale\nin the innocence of recorders and in an idiom simi
EXTD=lar to\nthat of the 16th century, the period the fantasia was fir

EXTT0=THE FIRST DOOR, appears as though it is going to be an\ninvention
EXTT0= or some contrapunctual device, but the theme\nmanages always to
EXTT0=get sdetracked into chains of\nsuspension and 'interrupted though
EXTT0=t.'
EXTT1=THE SECOND DOOR, "The Ugly Head of Greed," sets up\na foundation
EXTT1=for the theme to appear, but the first indication\nof thematic ma
EXTT1=terials is the DIES IRE (Day of Wrath) shortly\nfollowed by the t
EXTT1=rumpet sounding in a Baroque style which\nleads to the chant of a
EXTT1= portion of the 93rd psalm, which\ntranslates: "Rise Judge of the
EXTT1= World, give the proud their\ndesserts; while a pit is being dug
EXTT1=for the wicked."
EXTT2=THE THIRD DOOR is purely a description piece as the\n"Army of Pri
EXTT2=de" chases away the demons of door two\nThe function of this piec
EXTT2=e is concerned with the timbre\nand energy level leading to the s
EXTT2=harp cutoff of synthetic\ntexture to the all-acoustic texture of
EXTT2=the fourth door.
EXTT3=THE FOURTH DOOR allows the theme to come out\non its own and be t
EXTT3=otally exposed without fear of any\nwild crashing around, (it was
EXTT3= time for a break anyway.)\nThe relaxing nature of this idiom is
EXTT3=headed more toward\nthe classical period.
EXTT4=THE FIFTH DOOR, "Frenetic Energy," is to bring the\nenergy level
EXTT4=back up... "Frenetic" is due to all the dots\non the score that h
EXTT4=ave been played on the harpsichord,\nand for the raped and plunde
EXTT4=red jacks and plectra lying\naround on the studio floor. The the
EXTT4=me comes hauling\nin about halfway thru and allows itself to go t
EXTT4=hru all that.
EXTT5=THE SIXTH DOOR is the relief after the energy of five\nand before
EXTT5= the energy of seven. This door holds the\nfirst hint of a closi
EXTT5=ng theme even though its placement\nis a little early.  It's a no
EXTT5=stalgic, acoustic texture piece\nto rest your ears for door seven
EXTT5=... "Sweet bird that shunn'st\nthe noise of folly, most musical,
EXTT5=most melancholy." -Milton
EXTT6=DOOR SEVEN... "Thermal Inversion" is a "hot licks"\nhigh energy c
EXTT6=ut. This is the culmination of the musical\nenergy curve with wh
EXTT6=ich this side was conceived.\nThe theme comes in halfway thru wit
EXTT6=h an acoustic\ninstrument that overpowers the wall of synthetic t
EXTT6=exture.
EXTT7=THE FANTASY wraps it all up and gives final release to\nthe tensi
EXTT7=on. The theme comes back in the original\ninstruments for the la
EXTT7=st time, and the direct meaning\nand implication is up to you...
EXTT7="Sometimes used to indicate\na dream-like mood."
