EXTD=Arthur C. Clarke C.B.E. was born in Somerset in 1917.\nIn a long
EXTD=and illustrious career, he has written over fifty\nbooks includin
EXTD=g '2001: A Space Odyssey'. He currently\nlives in Sri Lanka.\n\n'Th
EXTD=e Songs Of The Earth' is my favourite book, and had a\ncurious -
EXTD=indeed, unique - genesis. Early in 1957, the\nyear the Space Age
EXTD=opened, the phrase "These are\nthe Songs of Distant Earth" popped
EXTD= into my mind from\nnowhere. It kept circling inside my head, as
EXTD=Sputnik was\nto go around the Earth six months later, and the onl
EXTD=y way\nof exorcising it was to sit down and hammer out a 12,000\nw
EXTD=ord novella, which was printed next year in an American\nscience
EXTD=fiction magazine.\n\nAnd there the matter rested until 1983, when
EXTD=I decided to\nexpand the original story into a full length book.
EXTD=I set myself\na deliberate challenge: was it possible to write a
EXTD=dramatic\nbut totally realistic novel about interstellar travel,
EXTD=in which\nthe speed limit set by the velocity of light was accept
EXTD=ed,\nand journeys between stars took decades - or even\ncenturies?
EXTD=\n\nThe writing proceeded with corresponding slowness, and\nnot unt
EXTD=il two years later was the novel sent off to the\npublishers. By
EXTD=then, I had departed almost completely from\nthe original story,
EXTD=and only the location and the basic idea\nremained. It would, if
EXTD=I may say so, make a wonderful movie,\nand indeed was once option
EXTD=ed by Michael Phillips ('Close\nEncounters of the Third Kind', et
EXTD=c).\n\nIn the introduction to the novel, I referred to 'Star Trek'
EXTD= and\npredicted that "No Warp 6 will ever get you from one\nepisod
EXTD=e to another in time for next week's instalment. The\nGreat Produ
EXTD=cer in the sky has not arranged his programme\nplanning that way.
EXTD= " Well, a major occupational hazard of\nscience-fiction writers
EXTD=is going out on a limb, which sooner\nor later may be sawn off. W
EXTD=itness this item in the May 1994\nissue of a periodical you are u
EXTD=nlikely to find at your local\nnewsagents. 'Classical and Quantum
EXTD= Gravity':-\n\n"Long a cliche of science-fiction writing, the warp
EXTD= drive\nhas transported countless fictional characters through\nli
EXTD=ght-years of interstellar space in the time it takes for you\nor
EXTD=me to travel to the market." Unfortunately for real-world\nspace
EXTD=travellers, the warp drive has always been thought\nto be inconsi
EXTD=stent with the laws of physics. But all this has\nchanged.....Mig
EXTD=uel Alcubierre, a physicist at the university\nof Wales in Cardif
EXTD=f describes a space-travel scenario that\nbears an uncanny resemb
EXTD=lance to the warp drive of\nscience-fiction. With Alcubierre's wa
EXTD=rp drive, we could\nreach any place in the universe in as short a
EXTD= time as we\nplease!\n"The warp drive envisioned by Alcubierre is
EXTD=made possible\nby the subtleness of Einstein's general theory of
EXTD=relativity".\n\nWell, I hope Mr. Alcubierre is right, but I am a l
EXTD=ittle\nsceptical. If warp 6 really is possible - where all the\nto
EXTD=urists? Another technological forecast in 'The Songs of\nDistant
EXTD=Earth', the Space Elevator, has fared rather better.\nBuilding th
EXTD=is would require a material strong enough to\nstretch all the way
EXTD= from stationary orbit down to the\nEquator, without being snappe
EXTD=d by Earth's gravity. Such\na material was discovered in 1993 by
EXTD=chemists at Rice\nUniversity, Texas: it's the tubular form of C60
EXTD=, better known\nas Buckminsterfullerene. And by an extraordinary\n
EXTD=coincidence, "Bucky" Fuller himself wrote the sleeve notes\nof my
EXTD= recording of 'The Fountains of Paradise', the novel\nbased on th
EXTD=is idea. What a pity he did not live to see the\ndiscovery of the
EXTD= material which now bears his name, and\nwhich may make this drea
EXTD=m come true!\n\nSince the finale of the novel is a musical concert
EXTD=, I was\ndelighted when Mike Oldfield told me that he wished to\nc
EXTD=ompose a suite inspired by it. I was particularly impressed\nby t
EXTD=he music he wrote for 'The Killing Fields' and now,\nhaving playe
EXTD=d the CD of The Songs of Distant Earth', I\nfeel he has lived up
EXTD=to my expectations.\n\nWelcome back into space, Mike: there's stil
EXTD=l lots of room\nout here.\n\n(C) 1994 Arthur C. Clarke\n\n'The Songs
EXTD=of Distant Earth' was dedicated to my adopted\nSri Lankan family,
EXTD= which has grown during the last decade.\nSo I am more than happy
