Setting the Maximum Memory Allocation for Virtual Machines

Warning: Before adjusting the maximum memory allocation for virtual machines, review the information in Memory Use: Host Operating System and Virtual Machines.

In some cases, you may want to assign a different amount of memory to reserve for running virtual machines. For example, you may want to improve performance for the host operating system by decreasing the amount of memory reserved for virtual machines.

Warning: Only advanced users should change the maximum memory allocation for virtual machines because doing so can have an adverse impact on the host or virtual machines. Selecting too high an amount of physical memory to reserve can cause the host operating system to thrash or hang if other applications are running on the host. Selecting too low an amount of physical memory to reserve can cause virtual machines to perform very poorly and also limit the number of virtual machines that can be run on the host.

To set the maximum memory allocation for all virtual machines:

  1. Connect to a virtual machine with a console.

  2. Select Settings > Reserved Memory from the VMware GSX Server console window.
  3. Set the maximum memory in the Reserved size (MB) field.
  4. Click OK.
