Enabling a PCMCIA Card from a Virtual Machine

VMware GSX Server does not provide direct support within a virtual machine for PCMCIA or PC Card devices, such as those found on notebook (laptop, mobile and portable) computers. Special PCMCIA or PC Card drivers or software such as card managers cannot be used within a VMware GSX Server virtual machine. However, standard Ethernet and Modem PCMCIA or PC Card adapters should be usable within a virtual machine, and special PCMCIA or PC Card devices or features should continue to be accessible from the host operating system while the virtual machine is running.

It should be possible to install an Ethernet PCMCIA/PC Card supported by the host operating system. The guest operating system sees a virtual AMD PCnet-II PCI Ethernet adapter regardless of what PCMCIA/PC Card is installed in the actual computer.

It should be possible to install a modem card that emulates a standard UART and is supported by the host operating system. The guest operating system should be able to see the modem mapped as a generic COM serial port.

Ejecting or installing a PCMCIA/PC Card used by a running virtual machine may cause problems.
