Upgrading to VMware GSX Server 2.0

Before You Install VMware GSX Server 2.0

Complete these steps — before you remove VMware GSX Server 1.0 and install VMware GSX Server 2.0.

When You Remove Version 1.0 and Install Version 2.0

There is a key precaution you should take when you remove VMware GSX Server 1.0 — or a prerelease version of VMware GSX Server 2.0 — and install VMware GSX Server 2.0. Leave the Existing License in Place.

The installation steps for your host may require that you run an uninstaller to remove a previous version of VMware GSX Server from your machine. The license remains in place. You do not need to take any special action. Just leave it where it is.

If you inadvertently remove the VMware GSX Server 1.0 license, reinstall the license following the instructions in the VMware GSX Server 1.0 manual.

If you received a serial number with VMware GSX Server 1.0, reinstall version 1.0, run the VMware GSX Server program once and type in the serial number when the program prompts you to do so. That installs your license. Then remove version 1.0, leaving the license in place.

Upgrade Instructions

If you used the tar installer to install VMware GSX Server 1.0 and you plan to use the tar installer for VMware GSX Server 2.0, you do not need to take any special steps to uninstall VMware GSX Server 1.0.

If you used the RPM installer to install VMware GSX Server 1.0, you need to take two steps to upgrade from VMware GSX Server 1.0.

  1. Uninstall VMware GSX Server 1.0 as root by running this command:
    rpm -e VMware
  2. Install VMware GSX Server 2.0.
