How VMware GSX Server Networking Appears on the Host Machine

Networking support in virtual machines is done on the host machine through a virtual switch or Ethernet adapter that implements several devices:

• VMnet0 — Used for bridged networking.
• VMnet1 — Used for host-only networking.
• VMnet2 — Used for custom networking.
• VMnet3 — Used for custom networking.
• VMnet4 — Used for custom networking.
• VMnet5 — Used for custom networking.
• VMnet6 — Used for custom networking.
• VMnet7 — Used for custom networking.
• VMnet8 — Used for network address translation (NAT) networking.

Each of these devices is logically associated with a virtual Ethernet adapter through which any number of virtual machines and the host may communicate.
