Resetting the State of a Virtual Machine

Selecting Power > Reset in the VMware GSX Server console window resets the virtual machine. It is similar to powering the virtual machine off and on. Resetting the virtual machine loses the state of your guest operating system. It is usually better to use the normal reboot procedure of the guest operating system or to shut down the guest operating system before resetting the virtual machine.

Options for Resetting a Virtual Machine

You can choose from the following options when resetting a virtual machine. Make your selection from the Power menu.

• Reset Virtual Machine — resets the virtual machine. This is similar to resetting a physical computer by pressing its reset button, so any programs running in the virtual machine may be adversely affected. Clicking the Reset button on the toolbar resets the virtual machine.
• Restart Guest Operating System — gracefully restarts the virtual machine. If there is a script associated with shutting down the guest operating system, it executes after the guest operating system restarts. This is the same as issuing a reboot command.
