Installing VMware Tools

  1. Be sure you install VMware Tools in your guest operating system.

Installation files for VMware Tools for Windows, Linux, NetWare and FreeBSD guest operating systems are built into VMware GSX Server as ISO image files. An ISO image file looks like a CD-ROM to your guest operating system and even appears as a CD-ROM in Windows Explorer. You do not use an actual CD-ROM to install VMware Tools, nor do you need to download the CD-ROM image or burn a physical CD-ROM of this image file.

When you choose Settings > VMware Tools Install from the VMware GSX Server console window to connect the virtual machine's CD-ROM drive temporarily to that image file and begin the installation process. (If you decide not to proceed with the installation, choose Settings > Cancel VMware Tools Install to return your virtual machine's CD-ROM drive to its original configuration.)

  2. Install VMware Tools for a Windows guest, VMware Tools for a Linux guest, VMware Tools for a NetWare guest or VMware Tools for a FreeBSD guest in the virtual machine.

Be aware that upgrading to a newer version of VMware Tools while the tools are running may not work correctly. When a virtual machine running Windows NT or Windows 2000 is upgraded, an older copy of VMware Tools may appear to work; however, VMware Tools does not update properly. As a workaround, exit VMware Tools before upgrading it. To do this, in the VMware Tools control panel click Cancel; then install the new version of VMware Tools.
