Setting Workspace Preferences

Select: Edit > Preferences > Workspace

On this tab you can specify your workspace preferences for the console window.

On the Workspace tab you can configure the following:

Whether any virtual machines appear in the virtual machine display each time you open a console.
Whether any host and user names appear in the console Login dialog box when you connect.
How often VMware Server checks for software updates.

Remembering Virtual Machines

If you select the Remember opened virtual machines between sessions check box, you see a tab for each opened virtual machine in the virtual machine display the next time you open a console. A virtual machine is considered opened if both of the following conditions are true:

The virtual machine was left open.
The virtual machine was powered on and off or powered on and suspended.

Remembering the Hosts You Visited

If you select the Remember visited hosts between sessions check box, the name of any VMware Server host that you connected to with a previous console session appears in the console's Login dialog box. To clear the list of remembered hosts, click Clear Host List.

Remembering User Names

If you select the Remember user names between sessions check box, any user names you used when connecting during previous console sessions appear in the console's Login dialog box. To clear the list of remembered user names, click Clear User Names List.

Checking for Software Updates Automatically

VMware Server checks automatically to see if updates for the product are available. By default, it never checks. You can check manually at any time by choosing Help > Check for Updates on the Web.

You can change the interval for the automatic check or switch to manual checks only. On the Workspace tab, select the interval in the Check for software update drop- down list.

Never — Choose this setting if you do not want to check for updates.
Daily — Check for updates when you start the product and at least one day has elapsed since you last started the product.
Weekly — Check for updates when you start the product and at least one week has elapsed since you last started the product. (This is the default setting.)
Monthly — Check for updates when you start the product and at least one month has elapsed since you last started the product.

Note: VMware Server only checks for software updates when you start the product. It does not automatically check for updates while the product is running, regardless of what you choose in the drop-down menu.
