Configuring a Generic SCSI Device

Select: VM > Settings > Hardware > Generic SCSI

Generic SCSI lets a virtual machine run any SCSI device that is supported by the guest operating system in the virtual machine. Generic SCSI gives the guest operating system direct access to SCSI devices connected to the host computer, such as scanners and tape drives.

You can set the following options under Device status:

Connected — check or uncheck this option to connect or disconnect the device while the virtual machine is running.
Connect at power on — check this option if you want the device to be connected automatically whenever you power on the virtual machine. You can change this setting when the virtual machine is powered on or powered off.

You can set the following under Connection:

Specify the physical SCSI device to connect to — choose a device from the drop-down list, which shows the SCSI devices available on the host computer. If the device name does not appear, enter the name of the /dev/sg entry for the device you want to install in the virtual machine. For example, if this device is named sga, then type /dev/sga.

Under Virtual device node you can select which SCSI device identifier to use for the drive. For example, if you select SCSI 0:2, the guest operating system sees the drive as ID 2 on controller 0.

When you set up a generic SCSI device, the virtual machine must be powered off.

If you are adding a new generic SCSI device, click Add to install the device.

To remove an existing generic SCSI device, select that device, then click Remove.

Click OK to save the configuration and close the virtual machine settings editor.
