The ship arrived in Honolulu Harbor last Thursday, the third instance this year in which vessels have been caught trying to smuggle in large numbers of illegal aliens. IFCSS Fouth Congress Being Held in Minneapolis ........................33 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Ding Yungui Source: CND-US, 6/26/92 Minneapolis, Minnesota - "Let's remember those who were killed, and let's also remind ourselves of what our Federation was for," Zhao Haiqing, President of the IFCSS, said in the opening ceremony of the IFCSS Fourth Congress here. The opening ceremony started at 9 o'clock this morning in the University of Minnesota Coffman Memorial Union. At the beginning, President Zhao Haiqing called observing one minute of silence for the 6.4 victims. "The IFCSS was born three years ago after the shock of the Tiananmen massacre," Zhao recalled. After President Zhao Haiqing's brief opening remark, some invited guests gave their speeches, among them include the Chairwoman of the Minnesota Republican Party and Professor Chen Yizi, an exiled Chinese dissident. Yu Dahai from the Chinese Alliance for Democracy, and Zhu Jiaming from the Federation for Democracy of China also spoke in the opening ceremony. Apei Jingmei from a Tibetan human rights group in Washington DC also spoke as a special guest. In their speeches, speakers congratulated the IFCSS for its outstanding work in last three years, and wished it greater success in the future. In the second half of this morning's session, Dr Zhao Haiqing, Mr Ge Xun and others reported the work of the IFCSS' Headquarters, the Council and the SVC to the Congress. Chairmen of IFCSS' all working committees also reported their works. After their reports, delegates raised questions about the operation of the IFCSS in past year. In the afternoon sessions, delegates from all over the United States introduced their bills, and two workshops were held. According to an official news release from the 4th Congress, there are more than 180 parti- cipants representing total of ninty three schools and organizations in the U.S.. Canada: FCSSC to Hold Fourth General Assembly in July 4-5 .............30 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Source: china-can (FCSSC network) The Fourth General Assembly of Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars in Canada (FCSSC) is to be held on July 4-5, 1992 in Vanier College, York University at Toronto, Canada. The purposes of the Assembly are: a) Information and experience exchange; b) Discussion of future development and examination of resolutions; c) Amendment of constitution; d) Election of new leadership --- president, vice-president, and members of other bodies. As the largest CSS group in Canada, the FCSSC consists of 23 CSSAs which have over 10,000 members. About 50 representatives from 19 universities across Canada will attend this year's meeting. The meeting offers a great opportunity for all CSSAs in Canada to share with others your experiences, to voice your concerns and to contribute your ideas to the optimization of operation and long-term development of the FCSSC. A seminar will be held as the first session of the meeting on the morning of July 4, discussing a few topics related to CSS here in CAnada, such as Canada China relations, China's economic development, and immigrants from China. The delegates will dance with CSSs in Toronto area in the evening of July 4th, at Jewish Community Center, downtown Toronto. Individual observers from all universities are also welcome.
