Accounts
@end(heading)
All MIT undergraduates,
students enrolled in Athena courses, people working on Athena-funded
projects, and MIT faculty investigating educational use of computers
can obtain accounts on Project Athena
computers.

Undergrads can register for accounts in the W20-500 cluster.
For more information on how to register for an account, see the
document, @i(Essential Athena).

If you have problems with your account (forgot password, etc.) call
(25)3-1325.

Rules of Use
@end(heading)

@begin(enumerate, spacing 0)

No smoking, eating or drinking in terminal rooms.

Do not move or rewire equipment in the clusters.

Do not lend your account to a friend.

Do not play games if the room is crowded.
If you are playing games and a student asks you to
logoff so he/she can do work, do so. Never use
dial-ups for games.

Run high load jobs during off-hours (5-7pm, midnight-7am)

Do not logon to a Student Center machine from a terminal in another cluster.

Do not copy copyrighted software.

You have the right to "bump" people from
special use terminals if they aren't using them
for the special purpose.

Do not use Athena printers as copy machines.
@end(enumerate)

Any problems, contact a consultant.
@begin(Heading,Flushleft,above .2inch, below .1inch)
Printer/Hardware Trouble
@end(heading)

Users should refill the printers with paper by following the directions
posted in the printer rooms.
For other printer problems, or problems
with a machine or
terminal, call the Athena Hardware Hotline at
(25)3-1410.  Athena monitors this hotline 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week. Service is less rapid at night and on weekends.

Do not use the printers as a free copy machine; if misuse continues, Athena
will begin charging for hardcopy.

System Status
@end(heading)
To find out the status of a machine after a system crash, call the
Athena Hardware Hotline at (25)3-1410.

@begin(Heading,Flushleft,above .2inch, below .1inch)
File Backup
@end(heading)
On @p(timesharing) systems,
Project Athena only restores files lost because of system crashes,
usually within 24 hours.
Athena cannot restore files that you
accidently delete or write over.

On @p(workstations) Athena does no backup at all. You must keep
your own floppy or streaming tape backup copies of critical files.

@begin(Heading,Flushleft,above .2inch, below .1inch)
Magnetic Tape Mount Requests
@end(heading)
If you wish to load files from a tape onto an Athena machine, or vice
versa,
fill out a tape mount request form
at the Information Systems Dispatch Desk in 11-226 (M-F 8 a.m. -
11 p.m., Sat. 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., (25)3-4121).  Turnaround is 48 hours.

@begin(Heading,Flushleft,above .2inch, below .1inch)
Dial-Ups
@end(heading)
Athena provides eight 1200-baud dial-ups for general use.
The number is (25)8-7211. You cannot connect to a W20 machine through
this number.

The Student Information Processing Board (SIPB) provides an
additional eight 1200-baud dial-ups that will let you connect to
a W20 machine.  The number is (25)8-7227.

See the
@i{Dial-Up Access} document for more information. Don't call Project
Athena with personal computer or modem problems.
We support only Project Athena equipment.

@begin(Heading,Flushleft,above .2inch, below .1inch)
Software Bugs
@end(heading)
If you encounter any software bugs in the @u[system] software, not your
own program, contact a consultant. If no consultant is available, use
the program @b[sendbug] to report the problem.

@begin(Heading,Flushleft,above .1inch, below .1inch)
Consultants
@end(heading)

The best source of assistance is the Online Consulting System (@i[olc]).
Type @i(olc) at your terminal and follow directions.

Athena consultants staff the W20 cluster most evenings. You may also
call (25)3-4435 to reach a consultant during the day and possibly
in the evening. See the posted schedules for specific hours.

@begin(Heading,Flushleft,above .1inch, below .1inch)
Minicourses
@end(heading)

Athena teaches free minicourses each term. See the @i(Minicourse Index)
and @i(Minicourse Schedule) in each cluster for dates, time, and place.

@begin(Heading,Flushleft,above .2inch, below .1inch)
Documentation
@end(heading)

Each cluster contains a reference set of Athena documentation, from
the brief @i(Essential) introductory series through the large
vendor reference manuals such as the @i(Scribe Users Manual).

You can buy Athena documentation, both @I(Essential)s and reference
manuals, at the IS Publications Office: 11-209, (25)3-6325, M-F 10am-4pm.

Unix also provides online documentation through the @b[man] and
@b[apropos] commands, and in the @i(/usr/doc) directory.
