WARNINGS
about
Athena Workstation Release 3.00
)
@center(Mike Johnson

Before a user receives the 3.00 Athena Workstation software
distribution, several precautions should be taken:

@begin(description)

@b(File storage)@begin(multiple)@\Some files that are stored on hard
disk will be destroyed by the new distribution. In general, any files
in the original distribution tree will be destroyed when new version
overwrites them (see the appendices for distribution tree).

In order to avoid loss of important files, it is
STRONGLY recommended that files be downloaded to diskette (floppy). If
this is impossible then files can be made safe from destruction by
placing them in these directories:
@begin(example)
@\\USR\yourname (e.g., \USR\TAYLOR, \USR\JOHN)
@end(example)
\USR\@i<username> is a convenient place
for one user to store his or her files. However, since hard disk failure is a
very real possibility, storage of files on floppy is ALWAYS prefered.
@end(multiple)

@b(\SITE)@\This directory in the tree does not have its files destroyed
with installation of the new software. This directory is suggested for
use when developing system files for general use. Again, floppy backup
is the only way to assure preservation of sensitive data.

@heading(APPENDIX: DIRECTORY STRUCTURES)

This document tells you which directories are overwritten when the 3.00
distribution is installed. Since files in these directories CANNOT be
restored after distribution, you must take measures to save those files
before we install the 3.00 release. You must either download the files
to diskettes (preferred), or by place the files outside the endangered
directories.

The Athena Workstation Version 3.00 system resides in 24 directories, listed
below:
@begin(example,leftmargin +5)

\  (root)
\BIN
\BIN\DOS
\ETC
\LIB
\USR
\USR\INCLUDE
\USR\LIB
\USR\LIB\2020
\USR\TMP
\USR\BIN
\USR\SRC
\USR\SRC\C
\USR\SRC\F77
\USR\SRC\PASCAL
\USR\SRC\NAG
\USR\SRC\NAG\EXPR
\USR\SRC\NAG\EXPT
\USR\SRC\NAG\EXPD
\USR\SRC\NAG\DOC
\USR\SRC\GKS
\USR\SRC\ATHENA
\DEV
\TMP
@end(example)

There is one safe directory, \SITE, whose files will not be zapped when
the new distribution is installed.

If your files are in any of the above directories, installation of the
new distribution will destroy them. Thus, you should download all
necessary files to floppy disk. Alternatively, you can move them
out of
the endangered directories. If your files are in a subdirectory of any
of the listed files (e.g., /USR/JIM), they should be safe. Only the
files in the listed directories are removed, not subdirectories.

If your files are in any of the unstarred directories listed, installation of
the new distribution will destroy them. Valuable files must be moved.
The double starred (**) directory /SITE should be safe to store files in.
