Dear Mr. Joy:]

I am applying for a position as a kindergarten teacher in response to
your advertisement in the July 15 @i[Boston Sunday Globe.]

Since speaking with you this past winter, I have worked as a
substitute kindergarten teacher in the Hamilton-Wenham school district
and as a volunteer in kindergarten classes in West Concord, Lexington
and Hamilton-Wenham. I will be attending a five-day @i[Whole Language
Institute] at Lesley College next week.

I began studying and working in education over 20 years ago, getting
my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education and my graduate
degree in management, first working with special needs children and
later with 2-6 year olds. I have run my own classrooms and acted as
head teacher, supervising student teachers and teacher aids, managing
teams of educators and therapists, coordinating programs and
communicating with parents of students. While working at the Child
Care Circuit, I have developed curriculum materials for preschool
programs.

I believe my experience and training have given me an awareness of
children's developmental and individual needs as well as the skills
necessary for managing a classroom, implementing a curriculum,
supervising student teachers and talking with parents.

My current areas of interest are developmentally oriented elementary
curriculum and the effects of classroom design and organization on
children's learning. I have had training in the "Math Their Way"
elementary math curriculum and have become familiar with the "Whole
Language" approach to teaching reading and writing skills. I am
enthusiastic about both of these curriculum programs. As part of my
master's program, I wrote a research paper on the importance of
classroom design to children's learning. I believe that classroom
design is a largely untapped opportunity to facilitate children's
education.

I look forward eagerly to applying my ideas on developmental curriculum
and classroom design.
