Dennis:

Just sending you a quick note to explain my situation. When I moved in, I
agreed to live in the room until at least the end of August 1993. I have
fulfilled this obligation and will be moving out at the end of this month. I
expect to have all of my belongings out of the room by late afternoon on the
first of September.

The reasons are numerous. The most significant being that I found the room to
be barely habitable during the cold winter months. The room temperature is
seldom what I would call comfortable. The reason for this is obvious: the
thermostat is in the kitchen area, which is unheated. This means that the
heat is not regulated. It is either on or off, and so the room is either too
hot or too cold. When you combine this with housemates who will turn off the
heat because they want to save money, you can see that the room would mostly
be too cold. There is also no heat in the bathroom. While this does help me
to wake up on those dark and cold winter mornings, it is not pleasant and
certainly not something that I will choose to go through again.

A second, and only slightly less important reason, is that the room is
essentially un-lockable. I don't have many valuable items, but those I do
have, I like to keep safe. There were several occasions when I locked myself
out of the apartment. I am sorry to say that on all of those occasions, it
took me less than five minutes to regain access to my room using nothing more
than a common id card. This is unacceptable.

I am aware that I haven't been the most reliable tenant. Please understand
that if I had been more excited about living there, I may have been a been
better. Also, when it took over six months to get my electricity even looked
at, I didn't feel like you were particularly enthused about me, either. (Yes,
I know you just looked at it, but it felt to me like it was too late.) And I
have always taken care of my rent almost immediately when you brought my
tardiness to my attention.

I have been in contact with the Cambridge Housing Authority and have described
to them my problems with the room. They concurred that these problems should
be corrected and are quite possibly in violation of Cambridge housing
ordinance. I did not ask them to come and do a formal inspection because I
wished to bring these issues to your attention before taking any such action.
I do feel that you should take care of these problems even though I am moving
out.

When I moved in, I gave you six hundred dollars which was to cover my first
and last months rent. Since this is my last month, my rent is already paid.
However, I am enclosing a check for \$150.00 to cover my utilities and any
damage that you decide I have done to the room. If you feel that my damages
exceed this amount, then please let me know, and I will get you more money.
Please be reasonable, and I will not pay to fix anything that was broken
before I moved in.

I will be leaving behind the stuff that was in the room when I moved in. This
includes the mattress and boxspring, the dresser, the rug, and the fridge.
(Although, the fridge will be moving into Rif's room. He said that he wants
it, and you told me that it was originally in that room anyway.)

If you have any problems, feel free to get in touch with me. I am difficult
to reach at work since I'm not often in the office, but you can come down most
mornings and find me. I don't usually leave for work until sometime between
8 and 10am. If you wish to try, though, my work number is 229-9111. I still
have no home number as you are probably aware.

Sincerely,
