Information about Java versions on Athena          8/31/99

Installing the JDK on Athena has been complicated by a multiplicity of
version releases from various sources, including "prerelease" and
"developer" versions which come out at frequent intervals. We can't
install every minor update, and this makes it hard for us to 
maintain the same version on all Athena platforms. 

The following are the latest JDK versions available on Athena:

Sun: JDK 1.2.2 (production release)
SGI: JDK 1.2.1 developer release (prerelease)
Linux: JDK 1.2.1 pre-v2 (prerelease)

At the time of this writing, these are the very latest versions available.
Please note that the SGI and Linux prereleases may have bugs and are not
intended to be final production software. In particular, the Linux version
is likely to generate errors about missing Zapf dingbat fonts on running
almost all of the Sun demos- however for the most part they seem to run
correctly.
