In the attached proposal we present a design for an MIT Libraries
interface on Project Athena. Several guiding principles emerged as we
developed the design.

\begin{enumerate}

 \item All library services on the network should be brought together
in a single interface for ease of use by even novice users.

 \item The design should take full advantage of the advanced
capabilities of the Athena network.

   \item The design should also be supported in a generic
terminal-based mode.

   \item The design should be transferable to other network platforms
such as Macintosh or PCs.

\end{enumerate}

The proposal deals with definition of library services on the
network, Athena systems available to support those services, and the
menu structure of the interface. The proposal does not address
operational issues -- they will have to be addressed as part of
implementation. However, our discussions naturally touched on
operational questions. Some of these are noted in Section 3.

The computing environment for library services is changing rapidly.
We think it is important to bring all the development efforts into a
coherent interface for users. We look forward to working with you on
the effort to implement networked library services.
