             How to Opt Out of Direct Marketing Lists

To opt out of many [Snail] Mailing Lists, write a letter giving your
complete name, name variations and mailing address to:

	Mail Preference Service
	Direct Marketing Association
	P.O. Box 9008
	Farmingdale, NY 11735;

and

	TRW Consumer Opt Out
	TRW Target Marketing Services
	701 TRW Parkway
	Allen, TX 75002.

To remove your name from many telephone solicitation lists, send your
complete name, address and phone number with area code to:

	Telephone Preference Service
	Direct Marketing Association
	P.O. Box 9014
	Farmingdale, NY 11735;

and

	TRW Consumer Opt Out
	TRW Target Marketing Services
	701 TRW Parkway
	Allen, TX 75002.

[These really do work. But you should consider that, although you can
get removed from mailing lists such as the one that sends big bundles of
fliers accompanied by a card that has your address on one side and the
photo of a missing child on the other, all that really does is keep you
from getting the address card. In theory that should also keep you from
getting the fliers, but the reality is that your mail carrier is giving
a bundle of fliers to every address on her/his route and assumes there
will be an address card in with your other mail. So you have to talk to
the mail carrier and let him/her know that you don't get those things.
I have some friends who also put a little note by their mailbox to remind
the carrier (handy when carriers change or are out sick). I found that
just talking to my carrier was enough (so far)... -psl]
