At his son's baptism in 1838, a merchant, of Hospicio, Pernambuco (now Recife, Pernambuco state), Brazil. In 1841, a
merchant, living at Grove Street, Liverpool, with his wife Sarah, their children
Eliza, Sarah, José, and Catherine, George FERNANDES, and three female servants. At his
daughter's birth in 1843, a merchant, of 68 Grove Street, Liverpool.
Slater's directory for 1847 lists Braga & Co., merchants, of Brazilian buildings, Drury Lane, Liverpool. In 1851, a
merchant in the Brazil trade, living at 112 Chatham Street, Liverpool, with his wife Sarah, their children Eliza, Sarah,
José, Catherine, and Lucy, a cook, and a housemaid. Gore's
directory for 1853 lists Braga & Co., merchants, of 24 Tower buildings West, Liverpool, and lists José himself
as a merchant and Brazilian vice-consul, office as above, home 102a Chatham Street. In 1858, of Newbie Terrace, Walton
Breck, near Liverpool. Slater's directory for 1859 lists Braga & Co., merchants, of 24 Tower buildings West, and lists
José as Brazilian vice-consul, office 23 Brunswick Street, Liverpool. In 1863, a director of the newly incorporated
Anglo-Portuguese Bank, Ltd., which had temporary offices at 27 Cornhill, London E.C. In 1871, a Brazilian merchant; Sarah
was living in the household of her daughter Eliza, at 5 Wilton Polygon, Crumpsall, Manchester, Lancashire. In 1881,
José was a Brazil merchant, living at 28 Ullet Road,
Toxteth Park, Lancashire, with his wife Sarah, daughter
Lucy, Sarah's sister Eliza, a cook, and a housemaid. At his death in 1884, a gentleman, of Douro Lodge, Ullet Road. (Note
that the Douro is a river in Portugal which discharges into the Atlantic
at Oporto.) His will was proved at Liverpool on 22 Jan 1885 by the executrixes, his daughters Catherine and Lucy; his
effects were valued at £333 11s. Is
José the same person as J.M. BRAGA, master of the brig Feliz Bahiano of 347 tons, arrived 14 Jan 1830 in

The 3rd marquesa of Távora and her son the 4th marquis were both executed in 1759. (See
Távora Affair.) Later English sources refer to Antonio's

sons Nowell, Joze, Harry, Sebastian, Guy, Charles, and Albert, his daughters Charlotte, Catharine, and Victoria, a
governess, six female servants and one male, his son Joze's future wife Maria OLIVEIRA, and Henry MORTON (independent, b.
ca. 1800 in England not Yorkshire, relationship not stated). At his son's marriage in 1846, described as a gentleman. In
1851, a brewer, living at Sandal with his wife Catherine,
their children Sebastian, Catherine, Guy, Charles, and Victoria, a cook, a housemaid, and a groom. In 1861, a brewer,
living at Sandal House, Sandal, with his wife Catherine, their children Thomas, Sebastian, Charles, and Victoria,
Victoria's husband Richard, their grandson Arthur BARFF, a cook, a housemaid, a groom (etc.), and a kitchenmaid. In 1871,
Catherine was a landowner, living at Cliffe Terrace, Wakefield, next door to her daughter Charlotte, with her
granddaughter Catherine M. FERNANDES (a scholar, b. ca. 1855 at Melbourne, Australia) and a general domestic

José Marques BRAGA (although the initials look more like J.N.W. than J.M. on the GRO's copy of
the marriage certificate). In 1851, a corn
miller, partner in a firm employing 45 men, living at Lake Lodge, Stanley cum Wrenthorpe, Yorkshire, with his wife Maria,
their children Leonard and Rosa, a cook, a housemaid, and a nurse. In 1861, a British subject, absent from home; Maria
was living at Pledwick House, Pledwick, near Sandal, with her children Rosa, Georgina, Oliveira, and Maria, visitors
Sarah and Catherine BRAGA, a governess, two nurses, a cook, a housemaid,
